By TPP Supporters (a.k.a Grasslings)
I am reaching out to you with deep concern regarding a severe human rights violation occurring in Taiwan. Dr. Ko Wen-je, former Mayor of Taipei, leader of the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP), and a key opposition figure, has been unjustly detained under highly questionable circumstances. This case represents a direct assault on political freedom and democracy in Taiwan, raising serious concerns about the erosion of judicial independence and the rule of law.
Dr. Ko, known for his strong stance on transparency, clean governance, and democratic principles, has faced increasing political pressure and harassment. His sudden and arbitrary arrest appears to be politically motivated—a strategic move to silence dissent, suppress opposition, and consolidate power under the ruling party. Such actions not only violate fundamental human rights but also set a dangerous precedent for political repression in Taiwan.
Key Concerns:
- Politically Motivated Detention – Dr. Ko’s arrest lacks transparency and due process, suggesting a weaponization of legal mechanisms for political gain.
- Threat to Judicial Independence – There are alarming signs that Taiwan’s judicial system is being manipulated to target opposition leaders, undermining democratic principles.
- Chilling Effect on Freedom of Speech & Political Dissent – This case creates fear among other opposition figures, discouraging political participation and silencing alternative voices.
- Erosion of Democracy in Taiwan – If left unchallenged, this incident may mark the beginning of a dangerous shift towards authoritarian tactics in what has been regarded as a model democracy in Asia.
Our Urgent Request to Freedom House:
- Launch an immediate investigation into Dr. Ko Wen-je’s detention and assess potential human rights violations.
- Issue an official statement condemning this act of political repression and call on the Taiwanese government to respect democratic values and the rule of law.
- Mobilize international pressure by raising awareness among global policymakers, human rights organizations, and the media to prevent further democratic backsliding in Taiwan.
Taiwan has long been praised as a beacon of democracy in Asia, but these recent developments threaten to undermine its hard-earned freedoms. The world cannot remain silent while political persecution unfolds. Your leadership in defending human rights and democracy is crucial in this critical moment.
We urge Freedom House to take immediate action. Please let us know if further information is needed, and we stand ready to assist in any way possible.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
